Zamalek have claimed an impressive 1-0 victory over Russian champions Zenit St. Petersburg in the friendly Matchworld Cup in Abu Dhabi. A first-half strike by full-back Ahmed Samir grabbed a famous win for the Whites, who finish in second place behind winners Shakhtar Donetsk. Ukraine's Shakhtar, who beat Zamalek 3-2 in the opener, edged Saudi champions Hilal by the same scoreline to lift the trophy. Great team goal! Zenit were expectedly in charge of play but were caught by surprise when their Egyptian opponents struck on the counter after the hour mark. A superb team move started from the Whites' own area eventually saw Omar Gaber square the ball to Samir to tap in from point-blank range for an unlikely lead. Zamalek almost doubled their lead just before the break but striker Ahmed Gaafar saw his brilliant finesse shot bounce of the bar in agony. Zenit maintained a stranglehold after the break and were somehow denied an equalizer three times in a row. Brazil forward Hulk hit the post with a powerful shot before Abdul-Wahed Al-Sayed made two saves in quick succession to thwart Viktor Fayzulin. Fayzulin then was guilty of a glaring miss near the end when he was sent clear by Hulk, only to slice the ball wide and make sure that Abdul-Wahed will not be beaten on the night.
