Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy revealed that the ministry is developing an online training and education platform dedicated to heritage and archaeology, as per a Cabinet statement. The platform aims to enhance staff capabilities both within the ministry and across the sector by harnessing digital knowledge related to historical sites, Fathy added, inviting experts and specialists to contribute ideas and proposals to enrich the virtual learning environment. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the the University Heritage Forum (UHF) – Historic Cairo on Sunday at the Prince Muhammad Ali Manial Palace Museum, Fathy oversaw the handover of the UHF final working document, undertaken in collaboration between the ministry (through the Supreme Council of Antiquities) and UNESCO's Cairo office. The project, launched in March 2024, brought together Egyptian universities and the Cairo Governorate to develop a management plan for Historic Cairo, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1979 . The initiative divided Historic Cairo into seven zones—including the Citadel, Al-Fustat, Edarb Lahmar and Al-Azhar—studying themes such as energy efficiency, urban agriculture, adaptive reuse, heritage documentation, climate resilience and community participation. Recommendations included using green energy in the Citadel, promoting urban agriculture in Al-Fustat, supporting creative industries in Al-Gamalyia, and fostering living heritage in Al-Azhar.
