The Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) chairman Ali El-Ghamrawy attended a joint high-level meeting between the African Medicines Agency (AMA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) held in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The meeting aimed to strengthen institutional cooperation between the two agencies and review European best practices in governance and medicines regulation, a statement published by the Cabinet announced on Thursday. This supports the development of regulatory systems in Africa, advancing pharmaceutical independence and enhancing health security across the continent, according to the announcement. Participants deliberated on the governance structure of the European regulatory network and examined potential frameworks for collaboration among different agencies in the network, the release added. They compared similarities and differences with the African regulatory network, seeking an integrated vision to build an effective African medicines regulatory system based on efficiency, transparency, and mutual reliance. El-Ghamrawy highlighted EDA's role in supporting the African Union's regulatory framework through contributions to shared pharmaceutical policies and the development of regulatory standards that promote continental integration. EDA promotes good governance in medicines regulation by adopting transparency, efficiency, and technical expertise exchange with African counterparts to build independent, resilient regulatory systems that meet Africa's health challenges.
