CAIRO: Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit received a report on Sunday from Egypt's ambassador to Algeria who was recalled to Cairo for consultations Saturday in the aftermath of attacks on Egyptian fans in Sudan following a World Cup qualifier playoff between the two national teams.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki said that the report by Ambassador Abdel Aziz Seif El-Nasr outlined the status of Egyptian residents and businesses in Algeria.
Zaki said that Seif El-Nasr was instructed to channel all the resources of the embassy towards the service of the Egyptian community in Algeria following reports of intimidation and vandalism of Egyptian businesses and interests in the capital city.
The Egyptian foreign ministry had summoned the Algerian Ambassador in Cairo Abdul Qader Hajjar Thursday to express Egypt s strongly-worded condemnation of the attacks on Egyptian citizens by Algerian fans in Khartoum.
On a related note according to egynews.net Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud ordered on Saturday the release of 45 protestors, including 17 university students, who were arrested during an angry demonstration near the Algerian Embassy in Cairo on Thursday, where several shops and 10 cars were vandalized and several riot policemen were injured.
The Algerian embassy was not damaged, said the prosecutor, who also dismissed charges against the protestors for other acts of vandalism in Zamalek.
