LUXOR, Egypt: Hussein Ahmed Shemit is accused of attempting to assassinate the former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in 1995 in Addis Ababa and yet is applying to run for the upcoming Egyptian parliamentary elections as an independent candidate. Shemit, who is from the city of Luxor in Upper Egypt, returned to Egypt after the Egyptian January 25 Revolution after 20 years of hiding in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. He said he'll run for the elections in coordination with the Islamic group leadership. Shemit said he'll run because of the freedom the January 25 Revolution brought forth. He also hopes the elections becomes an example of honest competition. Shemit asked Egypt's ruling military council and the current Egyptian government to make sure no incidents like the Maspiro clashes happens again. Such incidents should not affect the election process and the transition of power to an elected civilian government. It should be noted Shemit returned to Egypt with his Algerian wife and his five children in August.
