Egypt's Interior Ministry announced on Sunday it had thwarted a terrorist plot. In a statement, the ministry said it raided a hideout used by militants affiliated with Hasm, the armed wing of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, who were planning to revive the group's operations and launch attacks targeting security and economic facilities. The ministry said the group had sent a trained operative, who had received advanced military training in a neighbouring country, to infiltrate Egypt illegally and carry out the planned attacks. This coincided with the release of a video on social media showing Hasm members training in a desert area and vowing to carry out terrorist operations inside Egypt. Authorities managed to track the infiltrator, identified as Ahmed Mohamed Abdel Razek Ahmed Ghoneim. He had been convicted in multiple terrorism-related cases, including a death sentence in Case No. 479/2018 for targeting security guards in Sharqia, and life imprisonment in other cases involving the assassination of a police officer and an attempt to target the presidential aircraft. Ghoneim reportedly crossed into Egypt through desert routes and took refuge in an apartment in Cairo's Boulaq El Dakrour area. He was planning to execute the plot in coordination with another Hasm operative, Ihab Abdel Latif Mohamed Abdel Kader, who is wanted in Case No. 1126/2025 for attempting to target high-profile individuals. Following approval from the Supreme State Security Prosecution, security forces raided the hideout. The suspects opened fire indiscriminately on the forces and surrounding area, prompting law enforcement to return fire. The exchange resulted in the deaths of both militants. A civilian passerby was also killed by the militants' gunfire, and an officer was injured while attempting to rescue the victim. The Interior Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to confronting the plots of the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates, and all efforts aimed at undermining Egypt's security and stability.
