Egypt's nuclear watchdog says no radiological threat amid regional events
Published in Daily News Egypt on 18 - 06 - 2025

Egypt's nuclear regulatory authority has assured the public that the country is safe from any radiological threats, stating it has 24/7 monitoring systems in place, following a high-level emergency meeting convened in response to regional tensions.
The statement was issued after a meeting of the Higher Committee for Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies, chaired by Sami Shaaban, the head of the Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA). The meeting included representatives from all relevant ministries and government bodies.
During the meeting, the committee reviewed a report on regional nuclear and radiological developments. The authority affirmed in its statement that "the current situation in Egypt is completely safe… and there are no indications that point to the possibility of radiological effects occurring".
Officials confirmed that the ENRRA possesses monitoring devices that operate around the clock to ensure the safety and security of citizens.
The committee noted its continuous and direct follow-up with relevant national bodies, including the Egyptian Meteorological Authority and the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics. A memorandum of understanding to enhance cooperation in this field has been in place with these institutions since 2022.
The meeting concluded with several key recommendations aimed at maintaining a high state of readiness. These include the continued, meticulous monitoring of early warning networks and maintaining close cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
In an effort to enhance transparency and public trust, the committee also stressed the need to strengthen communication channels with citizens to counter rumours and increase awareness about the importance of nuclear and radiological safety and security.
Furthermore, the committee discussed the importance of developing a public awareness plan to clarify correct concepts about nuclear and radiological activities and to dispel any misconceptions that may arise.
The Egyptian Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority reiterated its full commitment to ensuring the health and safety of citizens and to providing accurate and transparent information to build trust and credibility.
