Egypt hosts high-level meeting to address Sudan's political, humanitarian challenges
Published in Daily News Egypt on 23 - 07 - 2024

Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Egyptian Expatriates' Affairs, Badr Abdel Aty, hosted a bilateral meeting with Sudan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hussein Awad, on Tuesday. This was followed by an expanded discussion session involving delegations from both countries.
Ahmed Abu Zeid, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Abdel Aty emphasized Egypt's unwavering support for Sudan's stability and safety. He assured that Egypt would spare no effort in helping Sudan overcome the political, security, and humanitarian challenges arising from the ongoing conflict.
The ministers discussed regional initiatives to address the Sudanese crisis, agreeing on the crucial role of Sudan's neighbouring countries. They highlighted the importance of seeking these countries' opinions and listening to their visions, particularly Egypt, which is making significant efforts to assist Sudan during this pivotal moment in its history.
During the meeting, Abdel Aty outlined the objectives of the Egyptian initiative to convene a conference of Sudanese political and civil forces, held in Cairo on 6 and 7 July. This conference served as a comprehensive platform for all Sudanese civil political forces. Key outcomes included the necessity of preserving Sudanese state institutions, providing relief and humanitarian support to Sudan and its neighbours, and ensuring the Sudanese people's ownership of the political process.
Abu Zeid added that Abdel Aty reviewed the progress of Egyptian development projects in Sudan, such as the electrical connection project and the reconstruction and development of the Wadi Halfa port. He reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to these projects and its humanitarian duty to respond to any relief needs of Sudan.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the importance of donor countries and organizations accelerating their pledges made during the Geneva (June 2023) and Paris (April 2024) conferences to support Sudan and neighbouring countries hosting refugees. He also emphasized the need to support the United Nations humanitarian response plan and bridge the existing financing gap.
Abdel Aty highlighted Egypt's extensive contacts with donor countries and humanitarian organizations to urge them to share the burdens with Sudan's caretaker government and neighbouring countries. He reiterated that Egypt would continue to provide humanitarian support to the Sudanese people during these unprecedented times.
The Sudanese Minister, in turn, emphasised the enduring bilateral relations and high-level coordination between the political leaderships of both countries. He expressed gratitude for the facilities and services Egypt has provided to Sudanese citizens since the crisis began, including health and educational services. He also acknowledged Egypt's efforts and initiatives aimed at resolving the crisis in Sudan.
