Egypt's President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi has directed for the continuation of comprehensive development efforts in the Sinai Peninsula.
As part of these efforts, the President also directed for the latest irrigation methods to be applied to maximise water use in the region.
He also directed for the area of agricultural lands to be increased to establish developmental and residential areas, to integrate with the state's strategy to expand integrated agriculture and land reclamation nationwide.
Al-Sisi's directives came during a high-level meeting, on Monday, with: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly; Sherif Ismail, Assistant President of the Republic for National and Strategic Projects; and Mohamed Abdel Aaty, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, among other officials.
The meeting reviewed "the executive position of the national project for reclamation of agricultural lands in Central and North Sinai".
In this context, the President's directives were particularly aimed at land reclamation projects, which look to increase the amount of agricultural lands in central and northern Sinai, and establish residential communities.
This comes as part of the state's comprehensive strategy to expand integrated agriculture and land reclamation at the national level, and by integrating with other similar projects. These are especially in the New Delta in the northwest of the country, as well as in the Toshka region and east of Al-Owainat in the New Valley Governorate.
Al-Sisi also directed for the provision of the latest equipment and machinery to reclaim the targeted lands in Sinai, explore the best agricultural activities, and apply the latest irrigation methods. The latter aims to maximise the economic use of water, and double production in quantity and quality.
During the meeting, the executive position on the targeted lands in North and Central Sinai was presented, to establish the national project for integrated agriculture in that region. This will take place in coordination between the various state agencies.
The meeting also reviewed efforts to implement the necessary infrastructure to provide water resources for the project, including irrigation water paths in the targeted agricultural areas. This is in addition to efforts to make use of treated agricultural drainage water currently available, were presented.
