The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said it is giving special attention to the case of an Egyptian worker who was physically assaulted in Jordan by a parliament member, along with others, in a statement released Sunday.
Jordanian security forces have arrested all the perpetrators Monday, according to a press release from Jordan's Interior Ministry.
Egyptian citizen Khaled Othman was assaulted Friday night by a Jordanian parliament member, along with others at his workplace in a restaurant in the city Aqaba in Jordan.
Widespread criticism followed as a video circulated on social media, revealing the incident. The video shows Othman being physically and verbally assaulted by the MP and other individuals.
The Aqaba provincial police had publicly revealed information about the perpetrators in the entire Jordanian kingdom to facilitate their arrest.
A Jordanian Interior Ministry official stressed that the incident is an "individual action" that does not affect the strong relations between both states, and only represents that individual's sentiments.
The press release further stressed that Jordan respects the rule of law, and will take all necessary measures to amend the situation. It also mentioned that this type of incident can occur in any state, affirming that the media should not exaggerate its implications.
Othman is currently in stable condition, according to Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid.
Following the assault, the Egyptian consul in Aqaba visited Othman in the hospital to keep track of his condition. A report was filed to the police regarding the incident and a lawyer was hired to ensure Othman's legal rights.
The Egyptian consulate is following the legal procedures being taken regarding the incident.
The Egyptian Embassy in Amman condemned Sunday the assault on the Egyptian worker, stressing that the rights of Egyptian citizens must be upheld.
Egyptian Ambassador in Amman Tharwat Samir directly contacted the consular administration in the Jordanian foreign ministry, as well as the Jordanian parliament, demanding a quick response to the incident.
From their side, the head of the Jordanian parliament and Jordanian foreign ministry officials expressed their utmost respect for Egyptian labourers in Jordan, and promised that necessary measures would be taken against the perpetrators of the attack.
