Condition of comatose protester deteriorates
Published in Daily News Egypt on 22 - 01 - 2013

Coma patient Mo'awad Adel, injured in November clashes on Mohamed Mahmoud Street, was taken to the Intensive Care Unit on Tuesday morning after his condition deteriorated.
Adel has been in a coma for around 14 months. He is a pharmacy student who was assisting the injured in a field hospital during the Mohamed Mahmoud Street clashes in November 2011.
Adel's mother, Nagat said: “He needs to be in a centre for people in comas… his treatment is not available in Egypt or the Middle East."
His family is calling on Prime Minister Hesham Qandil to intervene.
The Cabinet had approved Adel's treatment at the expense of the state worth £12,000 for a period of 15 days in the United Kingdom. The hospital that was going to offer Adel treatment refused to take him in and said his treatment would take months and the hospital could accept no less than £24,000.
Nagat said: “We are calling on the prime minister to raise the amount of money or increase the period so that I can send him abroad before something happens to him."
“They are calling him the living martyr!" Nagat added.
During the Mohamed Mahmoud clashes Adel was shot in the head. He was going to help a protester who had fallen to the ground. Before Adel could help, the protester was shot in the head. Adel tried to carry him to an ambulance and he was also shot twice in the head.
Activist Nisrine Yousef said Adel was supposed to be treated on the ninth floor of the new Al-Qasr Al-Eini Teaching Hospital where there is equipment to treat neurological disorders.
Yousef said: “There were renovations on the ninth floor so he stayed in an ordinary room on the eighth floor and he caught a virus two days ago."
