United Nations and Arab League held talks Wednesday at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo to discuss the recent developments concerning the Yemeni issue, Al Bawaba News reported. In a press conference, Yemeni envoy to the UN, Ismail Weld Al-Sheikh Ahmed and Arab League Under-Secretary General, Ahmed Ben Hali urged the disputed parties in Yemen to reach an urgent humanitarian truce as soon as possible. Al-Sheikh said the UN secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon had officially announced a conference on Yemen to be held May 28 in Geneva, stressing on the importance of the conference held May 17-19 in Riyadh as an essential step to support the elected Yemeni foundations. The Geneva Conference will be based on the Gulf Council Countries (GCC) Initiative, the pan-Yemeni parties national dialogue and its results and the application of the UN Resolution 2216 calling Houthis to lay down arms and retreat from the cities they had seized, Al-Sheikh added.
