Classics in Egypt: Eternal love
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 16 - 02 - 2017

It's one of those timeless designs that beg the question: Can we even call it a classic? The car looks modern with all the comfort options we find in most cars today except for the very expensive. But it can go under the “modern classic” category, or the old school as some might call it.
Car owner Yehia Rashdan is well known in the classic car community in Egypt as a Mercedes experts. He also has one of the biggest Mercedes car collections in the country. “The SL is one of the iconic Mercedes models,” Rashdan says.

Surprisingly, Rashdan managed to collect all the SL models which were produced from the 1960s to the 1990s, except for the R107 (1971-1989), an SLC.
“I knew about the SL long ago, and I always dreamed of owning one.”
The SL 300 24V has under its slim bonnet a Line-6 2962 cm3 engine producing 270 Nm of torque and 228 hp with a five speed automatic gearbox, enough to get her off from 0 to 100km/h in just 7.3 seconds, mind blowing not just for its time but also for today's standards.

The car has lots of luxurious options, including electric telescoping steering wheel, electric drop head roof, electric mirrors, CDchanger, SRS airbags for both driver and passenger, climate control, and a hard top that you can install.

“The condition of the car was very good, already restored, but I had to work on some details to meet my taste and satisfaction,” said Rashdan who wanted to bring the car back to its showroom condition once he bought it from another classic car collector who decided to let it go after keeping it for some time.

During work on detailing the car, Rashdan had some challenges: Minor damage in the leather interior. He was worried more about ruining it altogether than trying to fix it. He said he believed it was very difficult to find professional hands in the country to repair it, but luckily he found a pair, and the leather is now in perfect condition.

Other challenges were found in tweaking the suspension, the exhaust system, and also the soft top, but after so much work spent inthe SL, she looks absolutely magnificent with a price that ranges from LE300,000 to up to LE600,000. Rashdan believes it is hard to find a car with this kind of good condition in Egypt but not impossible.

As for the Germans who created the Mercedes, Rashdan respects them in general, not only their great history in car manufacturing but also the way they live.
And on the Mercedes, “she's not only four wheels and an engine. She's the star of the party.”
