Egypt army chief Tantawi attends wake of ex-spy chief Suleiman

Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, along with many other public figures, attended the wake of Omar Suleiman, Egypt's ex-spy chief who passed away last week in the US, at the Armed Forces Mosque in Cairo's Nasser City district on Sunday.
The head of the military police, General Hamdy Badeen, the current head of intelligence, General Mourad Mouafi, and former prime minister Essam Sharaf were also among the attendees.
Ahmed Kazaf El-Dam, the former coordinator of the Egyptian-Libyan relations who sought asylum in Egypt after the Libyan uprising erupted, also showed up a the ceremony.
President Mohamed Morsi did not attend the wake.
The funeral march of Egypt's ex-spy chief Omar Suleiman had taken in Cairo on Saturday amid tight security and in the presence of several thousand mourners, including politicians and top military brass. Tantawi was among the marchers while Morsi sent a representative.
A US clinic report on Friday said Suleiman died of a rare disease which affected his heart and kidneys.
Suleiman was appointed in 1993 by then-president Mubarak as head of Egypt's intelligence service.
During his 18-year tenure, he was the regime's policy architect on many key political issues, including the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as well as relations with Nile Basin countries.
Suleiman, appointed as vice-president during the January uprising in 2011, announced Mubarak's decision to resign from the presidency on 11 February on national television.
