Ex-spy chief Suleiman's body arrives in Cairo ahead of military funeral The body of Mubarak's longtime spy chief who died in the US on Thursday has arrived in Cairo, where his funeral will be held Saturday afternoon
The body of Omar Suleiman, Egypt's ex-chief of intelligence, arrived on Saturday from the US (where he passed away) amid aggravated security at Egypt's Cairo airport. Dozens of Suleiman supporters wore black t-shirts with the Egyptian flag imprinted on them. They prayed loudly for Suleiman, and also chanted against Israel and the US. Both of Suleiman's daughters, his stepson, wife, former MPs Mohamed Abu Hamed, Rami Lakah and singer Amr Mostafa waited in the VIP hall to receive Suleiman's body. Suleiman's military funeral is to take place Saturday afternoon at the Al-Rashdan Mosque, in the Cairo suburb of Nasr City. Field Marshall Tantawi, the head of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) will be in attendance. Following protocol, a delegation from the Egyptian presidential office will attend the funeral, as well as a delegation from Al-Azhar, Egypt's highest Islamic authority. Suleiman, Mubarak's longtime intelligence chief and ex-military general, died early on Thursday at age 76 while undergoing medical tests in the United States. A US clinic report released on Friday stated Suleiman died of a rare disease affecting his heart and kidneys. Suleiman was also president Mubarak's last and only deputy as well as one of his most trusted advisers. Unconfirmed reports had been circulating that ousted president Mubarak, currently serving a life sentence in Cairo prison, had requested to attend Suleiman's funeral. The rumours, however, were denied by the interior ministry on Friday. Suleiman was appointed head of Egyptian intelligence in 1993. During his 18-year tenure, which ended early 2011 following the popular uprising, he was at the helm for many important political issues, including the Palestinian-Israeli conflict as well as relations with Nile Basin countries. It was Suleiman who announced Mubarak's decision to step down from office on 11 February 2011 when Egypt's revolution exploded.
