Egypt launched their African Cup of Nations campaign with a 22-18 win over defending champions Algeria in the tournament's opener on Thursday. The Egyptian team dominated the game with a strong performance as they won the first half 11-7, benefiting from playing at home. The defending champions failed to deal with Egypt's compact defence, which was in great form throughout the clash. Egypt's keeper Karim Hindawi was the man of the match with his many saves, opening the door for the Pharaohs to claim a precious win. Egypt will face Nigeria, who defeated Cameroon 24-15 earlier in the day on Friday. The African champions will represent the continent at the Olympics, while the first three teams will qualify for next year's World Championship in France.
