A Masked Ball at Cairo Opera House Between 18 and 22 May (except 21 May), Cairo Opera House Main Hall will give it's stage to Verdi's opera 'Un ballo in maschera'
Un ballo in maschera (A Masked Ball)is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi to the libretto by Antonio Somma, loosely based on a play by French playwright Eugène ScribeGustave III. The original play takes us back to 18th century Sweden and thereign ofking Gustav III. A political conspiracy leads to an attack organised on the king during a masked ball. Elements of the storywere modified,making many events historically inaccurate. Also during the lifetime of Verdithe opera went through censorship regulations imposed by both Naples and Rome, in addition to modificationscaused bythe political situation in France. This opera premiered in New York on 11 February 1861. Cairo Opera Company withCairo Opera Orchestra andCairo Opera Ballet Company will perform theMasked Ball on 18, 19, 20 and 22May at the Cairo Opera House Main Hall at 8 pm.
