Ahmed Elmohamady made his first appearance under new manager Martin O'Neill in a dramatic 1-0 victory over Premier League leaders Manchester City. A 93rd minute strike from substitute Ji Dong-Won handed Sunderland a shock win and meant a cruel defeat for City, who dictated play over the two halves at the Stadium of Light. Egypt's Elmohamady, who hasn't played since a 2-1 defeat at Wolves early in December, came on eight minutes from time to replace midfielder David Vaughan. The Black Cats moved to 13th place as City remain leaders after the surprise defeat of rivals and defending champions Manchester United to Blackburn.
