Italy coach Roberto Donadoni rued his side's bad luck following a disappointing 1-1 draw with Romania in EURO 2008 on Friday. "It certainly wasn't a lucky game! We worked hard, created a lot of chances and at the end risked losing an incredible match," Donadoni was quoted as saying by Calcio Italia. The world champions fell behind to Adrian Mutu's goal in the 55th minute, thanks to a dreadful error by Italy's full-back Gianluca Zambrotta. "The Zambrotta incident can happen, it was bad luck. Clearly, when you concede a goal it all seems bigger, but he had a great overall performance." Former Livorno boss Donadoni did not point the finger at the referee, but questioned his decision to disallow Luca Toni's first-half goal. Towering frontman Toni headed home Zambrotta's cross from close range in the first-half's additional time, but his effort was ruled out for offside.
Television replays showed that a Romanian defender played Toni onside. "I am not accustomed to discussing referees. Let's just say it was an off day for him," Donadoni said. "I find it funny that the linesman can see Panucci off the field against Holland, but not a player on the pitch holding Toni in play." Donadoni highlighted the importance of Italy's final group stage game against rivals France. "Now we are facing the final game and have to get maximum points," he insisted.
