The Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) started to install 250,000 smart electricity metres in a trial across six electricity distribution companies.
Ministry of Electricity Spokesperson Ayman Hamza said that the new step came within the electricity sector's plan to provide electricity for all purposes through modern technological methods. He added that the use of smart metres would improve the performance of the electricity grid.
Hamza further added that the EEHC aims to replace 40m old electricity metres with smart ones.
Elsewedy Electrometer Group will supply 50,000 smart electricity metres to the South Cairo Electricity Distribution Company in the Sixth of October and Sheikh Zayed cities, as well as another 28,000 smart metres to the Middle Egypt Electricity Distribution Company in Minya and Assiut.
China's Huawei will also supply 39,000 smart electricity metres to the Alexandria Electricity Distribution Company in central Alexandria and Borg Al Arab areas, while SAGEMCOM will supply 53,000 smart electricity metres to the North Cairo Electricity Distribution Company in two regions: Al-Obour and Nasr City.
Iskraemeco Egypt Factory will supply 50,000 electricity metres to the Canal Company for Distribution of Electricity in 10th of Ramadan city. ZTE Corporation will supply 30,000 smart electricity metres to the South Delta Electricity Distribution Company in Tanta.
