CAIRO: Germany legend Lothar Matthaus is shortlisted as a possible replacement for Ahly coach Manuel Jose, according to Modern Sport TV. Jose will leave Ahly when his contract expires by the end of next season, but it seems that the Egyptian champions are already looking for a new boss amid their recent misfiring. Modern Sport claimed that former Ahly manager Dietrich Weise spoke to them about the prospect of seeing Matthaus on the Red Devils bench next season. It is believed that Ahly board asked retired tactician Weise to recommend a "charismatic coach for the task, and the 75-year-old tipped compatriot Matthaus. Matthaus is currently in charge of Israel s Maccabi Netanya, but it was announced last month that he will depart at the end of the season. The 48-year-old enjoyed a glittering career as a footballer, where he dazzled for the likes of Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. He was voted 1991 FIFA Player of the Year after skippering the Mannschaft in their Italy 90 triumph. He is also Germany s most capped footballer with 150 games, including 25 appearances in five World Cup competitions. However, Matthaus has yet to live up to his reputation in terms of coaching, with a number of poor spells with unfashionable teams. The ex-Bayern sweeper managed Rapid Vienna, Partizan Belgrade, Atletico Paranaense, Red Bull Salzburg and Netanya, in addition the Hungarian national team.
