CAIRO: Leading Egyptian reform figure Dr. Mohammed ElBaradei commented on the occasion of the first session of Egypt's newly elected parliament on Monday, celebrating the parliament as a realized goal of the revolution. “Glory to the Martyrs, injured and rebels….as they sacrificed their lives for the first results of the 25 January Revolution, which is an elected parliament,” said ElBaradei in comments published on his official Facebook page. The reform leader continues that he is “astonished at those who believe that defying or overthrowing the ruler is prohibited, yet then celebrate the anniversary of the revolution,” in reference to the actions of Egypt's interim military leadership. He spoke to the newly elected MPs in his comments, telling them that they are responsible for “implementing these demands, not carrying slogans,” speaking to the fact that many of the MPs came today wearing yellow sashes printed with the popular “No Military Trials for Civilians” slogan. The Egyptian Alliance Party has called on all political movements to stand up and rally around Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei, the former Secretary General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and choose him as the head of a proposed committee that would be responsible for drafting the country's next constitution. The move, they say, would guarantee that the document reflects the principles of the revolution, including freedom, democracy and social justice. The party said that Dr. ElBaradei is an inspiring and credible man who represents the conscience of the nation.
