Kathmandu's Cameron funds pig fight The founder of outdoor clothing and equipment chain Kathmandu has given $2 million to help fight factory farming with some of the money being offered to workers to rat on their bosses. The Animal Justice Fund (AJF) was launched by the animal rights group Save Animals From Exploitation (Safe) today after Kathmandu founder and philanthropist Jan Cameron gave $2 million to the fund. Australian-born Ms Cameron, who founded Kathmandu in 1987, is a prominent supporter of animal welfare having previously given A$5m ($6.4m) to set up a similar fund in Australia. Voters pass animal rights law in Missouri One of the chief arguments used by opponents of Proposition B in Missouri, which passed by a small margin in Tuesday's election and restricts the size of dog breeding facilities and places burdens on them it exempts others from, was that it was a “foot in the door” for the Humane Society of the United States that would lead to similar regulations against livestock and other animal ag sectors in the state. That's why its opposition was so broad for what could have been a very simple measure had it been worded right. HSUS and its allies insisted all along it is just about the puppies and that agriculture is over-reacting in seeing a threat. BLM says wild horse roundup near Burns is necessary to protect habitat The federal Bureau of Land Management has begun rounding up wild horses near Burns to preserve public land as animal rights activists keep watch. “We're trying to make it as transparent as we can,” said BLM spokesman Mark Wilkening of the Vale District. The law requires the agency to keep herds under certain levels to protect the habitat and the horses, he said. The BLM manages about 38,400 wild horses and burros on rangelands across the West. In 2010, it is scheduled to gather 12,000 horses, including about 360 from the Warm Springs herd. Those that are not adopted will be sent to long-term pastures in the Midwest. NZ Govt may ban pig farming practices Prime Minister John Key has signaled the government may consider a ban on some controversial pig farming practices. Asked today about a plan by the Victorian government to ban sow stalls by 2017 Mr Key said the New Zealand government was considering a report that covered pig farming practices. He confirmed that New Zealand may follow Australia's lead but said the Agriculture Minister David Carter was still considering the report. Injuries, online ads lead to dog-fighting fears in Calgary Animal-welfare officials fear underground dog-fighting is on the rise after several large canines suffering from mysterious injuries and scarring turned up at the Calgary Humane Society and an accompanying spike in online advertisements for fierce, muscular dogs. The Humane Society and the City of Calgary are so concerned with the proliferation of ads, they have asked local online trading site Kijiji.ca to block postings that use phrases such as “large head size” and “fearless, aggressive and strong” to describe the animals for sale.
