Egypt's National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) agreed to expand cooperation on food safety and public health during talks in Cairo on Monday, the NFSA said in a statement Monday. NFSA Chairman Tarek El-Houby met with WHO's Representative to Egypt, Nima Saeed Abid to discuss ways to support national food safety programmes, improve inspection systems, and strengthen technical training and capacity building. El-Houby said Egypt is committed to aligning its food safety policies with international standards and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those tied to health and food quality. He also stressed the importance of continued coordination with the WHO to enhance the country's food safety ecosystem. The two sides discussed support for national efforts to reduce trans fats and added sugars in food products, in line with WHO health recommendations aimed at curbing non-communicable diseases. Abid praised the NFSA's expanding role in modernising Egypt's food sector and reaffirmed WHO's readiness to provide technical support and deepen collaboration in the coming period.
