Egypt and China signed an agreement for the establishment of a Level-3 Biosafety Laboratory, the government detailed in a statement on Friday. The lab is aimed at enhancing Egypt's capacity to detect and respond to high-risk pathogens such as COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. The exchange of letters was signed on Thursday by Egyptian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat and Chen Xiaodong, Chairman of China's International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA), during Chinese Premier Li Qiang's official visit to Egypt. The signing took place at the Cabinet headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, witnessed by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Premier Li. The new facility will provide a secure environment for conducting research, diagnostics, and developing control measures for hazardous viruses that require strict biosafety containment protocols. "This project represents a strategic step toward strengthening Egypt's health security infrastructure and pandemic preparedness," the Ministry of International Cooperation said in a statement. The initiative is part of a broader push to deepen scientific and technical cooperation between Egypt and China, particularly in the fields of public health and biosecurity.
