Egypt has added 46 wheat silos over the past decade, nearly doubling its national storage network as part of efforts to strengthen food security, the Cabinet said in a statement on Tuesday. The number of silos has risen from 35 in 2014 to 81 in 2025, with total storage capacity increasing from 1.2 million to 3.4 million tons, the statement said. The expansion is aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and improving supply chain efficiency. The government said the new facilities support its ability to maintain a strategic wheat stockpile and stabilise local markets, especially as Egypt remains one of the world's top wheat importers. The modern silos help reduce grain waste, which previously reached up to 15% under traditional storage methods, according to the statement. The project includes the distribution of high-efficiency storage units across various governorates to better serve population centres and streamline logistics.
