Egypt has begun receiving local wheat for the 2025 season, with 360 tons already delivered in Fayoum Governorate ahead of the official nationwide launch on April 15, the Cabinet said in a statement on Thursday. The Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has set the procurement price for one ardeb of local wheat at 2,200 Egyptian pounds for 23.5 purity, 2,150 pounds for 23 purity, and 2,100 pounds for 22.5 purity. Minister Sherif Farouk stated that the pricing, which surpasses that of imported wheat, is designed to incentivise farmers and reinforce Egypt's efforts toward wheat self-sufficiency. In Fayoum, the total cultivated wheat area spans 181,000 acres, with authorities targeting the procurement of 240,917 tons this season. Daily deliveries are expected to average 70 tons, ramping up to more than 2,000 tons during peak harvest weeks. To accommodate the supply, Fayoum is equipped with two main silos offering a combined capacity of 120,000 tons. Additional storage will be provided through Middle Egypt Mills facilities. Ahmed Hassan, director of Tamiya Silo, one of the largest in the governorate, confirmed plans to receive 50,000 tons of local wheat, with the remaining 10,000-ton capacity allocated for imported stock. The Ministry said various wheat collection points, including silos and open storage barns, have been prepared and are under active supervision to ensure a smooth and efficient supply process.
