China pledged greater support to Pacific Island countries in combating climate change, promising 100 development projects over the next three years under its Belt and Road Initiative, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a summit in Xiamen on Wednesday, according to Reuters . According to a foreign ministry readout, Beijing will invest $2 million in clean energy, fisheries, low-carbon infrastructure, and tourism across the region. The support comes amid a broader slowdown in Chinese overseas lending, reflecting pressures on its $19 trillion economy. "China fully recognises the vulnerability of the economic and social development of the Pacific Island countries in the face of the climate change crisis," the statement said. The move marks a renewed push by China to deepen ties with the Pacific, as US aid to the region remains frozen and several island nations face increased tariffs from Washington.
