Independent Combo returns to Rawabet Theatre (VIDEO)
Theatre performances, Choir Project and concerts shape programme of 'Independent Combo' at Rawabet Theatre between 4 and 25 December
Published in Ahram Online on 22 - 12 - 2013

After a successful series of performances in 2012, Independent Combo, a project bringing together performing artists at downtown Cairo's Rawabet Theatre, is returning this December.
It starts on Wednesday with a performance by BuSSy, where young actors present monologues of stories collected from real women about their lives in Egypt.
After launching in 2006 at the American University in Cairo, in 2010 BuSSy transitioned from a university-affiliated group to a more inclusive independent theatre project, performing at numerous venues in Egypt and abroad; most recently France and the United States.
Another theatre performance stemming from real experience is Al-Tamye Theatre Company's Madd w Gazr (High Tide, Low Tide), which will be shown on 20/21 December.
Madd w Gazr is the second half of Fantasia El-Lagna (Fantasy of the Checkpoint) which the company produced in 2009. The performance is based on the real life stories of group members, and features musical numbers. It is directed by Salam Yousry.
Established in 2002, Al-Tamye has been seeking to explore and experiment with alternative means of expression of the realities of living in Egypt and the Arab world using scenography, poetry, music, video art among others.
On 23 and 24 December, the Choir Project will perform songs and stories in celebration of its three-year anniversary.
The project, also managed by Salam Yousry, brings together people who are not musicians or singers to work together in a workshop and write songs about life in Egypt.
After the revolution, the performances have been centred around political events in Egypt but some social commentary remains.
The workshops have taken place in Cairo, Alexandria and even with Egyptians living in London. The Choir Project has performed all over Europe and on Bassem Youssef's El-Bernameg earlier this year.
Finally on 25 December, Aya Metwaly and Rasha Magdy will be performing songs they have written and composed individually and a few collaborations.
