Sunday 24 November 'The Arsonists' at AUC New Cairo, 5pm This play, subtitled The Morality Play without a Moral, was written in 1953 for German radio after the Nazi regime and World War II. It shows how regular citizens can be enticed to carry out evil acts. 'The Arsonists' is set in a nameless country, at a non-specified time, allowing for varied audiences to relate to its themes. The play shows how societal weakness and apathy, in addition to the greed of some, can allow evil to take over. AUC's production is directed by Frank Bradley and will also be performed on 25, 26 and 27 November. Malak Gabr Theatre, American University in Cairo, New Cairo Sweet Dreams: Amre Heiba at Mashrabia Gallery In a solo exhibition opening on 17 November at the Mashrabia Gallery in downtown Cairo, contemporary artist Amre Heiba showcases a selection of paintings produced between 2009 and 2013. The artist uses art to react to his observations of public life and express his private reflections. The collection features large-scale oil paintings, mostly depicting abstract figures in strong, raw colour. According to the artist, painting is a medium through which he can capture his thoughts, feelings and dreams. The exhibition runs until 9 December. 8 Champollion Street, Downtown, Cairo ## Also on this day: Check our Art Agenda for exhibitions held in Cairo Monday 25 November Hewar El-Nil in The American University in Cairo, 6pm The Nile Project invites interested individuals to participate in a conversation about the sustainability of the Nile Basin and the role of students in this process. The talk will be preceeded by the screening of a documentary about the Nile Project's 2013 gathering in Aswan, which featured 18 musicians from around the Nile basin who gathered to discover their diversity and what they have in common. Mansour Hall, AUC New Cairo The Monodramas from Ancient Egypt at the Embassy of the Czech Republic, 6.15pm The wonders of Ancient Egypt will be brought to life through Samira Kirollos' theatrical performance. With a background in ballet and violin playing, Kirollos is a performance storyteller living between Cairo and London. Over the past three decades, she has performed across the globe, telling stories to children and adults. Her performance at the Czech embassy will be accompanied by two flutists from Al-Nour Wal Amal blind girls chamber orchestra. Confirm your place by sending an email to [email protected] 4 Al-Dokki Street, next to the German school, Giza Her Name is Naasa at the Cairo Opera House, 7pm Directed by Karima Bedeir, the show revives the folkloric story of Ayoub and his loving wife Naasa. When Ayoub's illness leads to a loss of wealth, Naasa stands by him until they find a cure, giving up all luxuries. The story shows that Ayoub was cured by his wife's love. Her name is Naasa aims to underscore the strength, capacity for sacrifice and patience of Egyptian women. The performance will be repeated on 26 and 27 November. View photo gallery from the performance here Main Hall, Cairo Opera House 'My Nineties' in Falaki Theatre, 8pm Cairo's Falaki Theatre will host My Nineties, an art project that explores media trends during the nineties and their influence on the Egyptian collective memory through an audio-visual performance by visual artist Mohammed Allam and electronic musician Rami Abadir. The project utilises collected footage from across the decade as source material. A documentary film featuring several icons of the era's media industry will additionally be screened, and a book documenting snipets from newspapers, magazines and research papers about television and media in this era will be on sale. Tuesday 26 November Celebrating Søren Kierkegaard at Makan Centre for Arts and Culture, 6pm The Danish Egyptian Dialogue Institute (DEDI) together with the Danish Embassy will celebrate the bicentennial of Philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. The event will include a documentary screening about Kierkegaard, followed by a debate on the philosopher and life's big questions. Panellists will include: Rasmus Quistgaard from Denmark, Kierkegaard Connoisseur; Hassan Hamaad, Chairman of the Department of Philosophy, University of Zagazig; Andeel, Cartoonist, Script Writer, Co-founder of comic magazine Tok Tok among others. 1 Saad Zaghloul Street, El Dawaween, Cairo No Thank You, We Don't Want It: Mona El-Bayoumi at Picasso Art Gallery A solo exhibition featuring paintings by Mona El-Bayoumi runs until the end of November at the Picasso Art Gallery. The exhibit sets out to showcase the artist's interpretation of the role of Western forces in Egypt over the past three decades. Symbolism drawing on Egypt's pharaonic heritage and a vibrant palette will be employed to illustrate the Egyptian people's yearning for freedom and independence, according to the curatorial text. Small Hall, Cairo Opera House, Zamalek, Cairo Last day of O.M.G.: Bassem Samir at Safarkhan Art Gallery This multi-media exhibition by emerging artist Bassem Samir is the product of years of observing Egyptian society and its transformations. Combining a mixture of conceptual photography, installation, music, video and other elements, Samir attempts to capture the state of chaos he believes Egypt to be in today. "The concept behind the works is a blend of the current revolutionary, political, and social state with a phenomenal ancient history that is long forgotten," the artist's statement reads. Exhibition runs until 27 November. 6 Brazil Street, Zamalek, Cairo Costumes from A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Centre of Artistic Creativity The enchanting and imaginary world of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream is materialized through theatrical scenography and costumes. Works created by students of the Creativity Studio, are on display at the Centre of Artistic Creativity (Markaz Al-Ibdaa) until the end of the month, daily, between 5pm and 8pm. Thursday 28 November Screening of Bollywood movie Bodyguard at Maulana Azad Centre for Indian Arts A classical story of the daughter of a wealthy man who falls in love with her bodyguard. Released in 2011, Bodyguard broke many records in Indian cinema, including the highest grossing film on its opening day and in its opening week, grossing US$15 million. This is the last screening in Maulana Azad centre's weekly film screenings in November. December films will be announced soon. Check the movie trailer below. 23 Talaat Harb, Downtown Cairo Lectures on cinema and filmmaking in Makani, Damietta, 5pm Lectures covering a wide range of topics about cinema and filmmaking are part of Makani's project titled, Face to Face: Social media are older than the Internet, organised in collaboration with Dahlia Refaat. The project aims to reach emerging filmmakers in Damietta. Lectures take place on Thursdays and Fridays until the end of November. Read more here Makani, Sorour Square, Oscar building, Damietta Brain Damage: Collective Exhibition at Darb 1718 A collective exhibition entitled Brain Damage opened Saturday 16 November at the Darb 1718 Contemporary Art and Culture Center, featuring artwork by a group of emerging artists (Amro Okacha, Fady Galal, Fajr Soliman, Ghadir Wagdy, Haytham Sherif, Maghraffiti, Mohamed Khaled, and Razan Saeed) working under the umbrella of Wust el-Balad Studion, an art incubator born after the 2011 revolution to support young artists. Its curatorial statement says that the exhibition will tackle "the crippling effects of years of neglect of the Egyptian education system on society's ability to think properly and progressively with regards to human development and the status of women." Sweet Sound Band consists of Mounir Nasr El-Din on violin, Kadry Nasr El-Din on drums, Akram Abdallah on bass, Omar Eltoudy on keyboard and piano, Akram El-Hanboly on lead guitar, guitarist Ehab Aboud as lead singer, along with singer Hala Nada. Small Hall, Cairo Opera House, Zamalek CairoBerlin Exhibition in Nile Sunset Annex, 7pm Garden City's unique artist run space presents a show curated by Daniel Rode, which combines works by contemporary artists in Cairo and Berlin. Among the participating artists are: Taha Belal, Jenifer Evans, Julian Faulhaber, Ganzeer, Sara Pfrommer, Daniel Rode, Klaus Walter. For details, view our special section dedicated to Panorama - Check our Art Agenda for exhibitions held in Cairo Sunday 1 December Short Film Forum at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Taking place throughout the whole of December, the Film Forum will screen a series of movies under consecutive themes. 1 December will be dedicated to short movies and will include eight films from Gulf countries: UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The event is organised in cooperation with Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) and the Gulf Film Festival (GFF). The total screening time of all the movies is 110 minutes.
