Egypt's Arab Contractors has won five awards at the 2025 Engineering News-Record (ENR) Global Best Projects Awards, including top recognition for the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project in Tanzania, Egypt's ministry of housing said on Sunday. The project, developed in partnership with Elsewedy Electric, was named Best Global Water Project, marking the fifth consecutive year the company has earned international honours from ENR, one of the world's leading construction industry publications. Minister of Housing Sherif El-Sherbiny praised the company as a key driver of Egypt's development agenda and regional cooperation, calling it "a symbol of engineering excellence and national commitment." "Arab Contractors stands as one of Egypt's most powerful development tools and an ambassador for Egyptian expertise across Africa," El-Sherbiny said. The Julius Nyerere Hydropower Dam, commissioned by the Tanzanian government and overseen by Egypt's ministry of housing, is designed to generate 2,115 MW of electricity, regulate the Rufiji River, and reduce flood risks. It is one of Africa's largest infrastructure projects and a flagship for Egyptian-African cooperation. For the first time in its history, Arab Contractors received two ENR awards for African projects, reinforcing its position as one of the Middle East and Africa's most prominent engineering firms. Five Award-Winning Projects in 2025 In addition to the Julius Nyerere Dam, Arab Contractors received awards for four other major projects: * New Alamein Tourist Promenade – Award of Merit (Recreation & Sports) A 7-kilometre waterfront in New Alamein City, featuring bridges, promenades, and lake development. It is a major attraction in Egypt's new fourth-generation cities. * Zeinab Khatoun Historic House, Cairo – Best Global Project (Restoration) A restored Mamluk-era heritage site converted into a multi-use cultural centre, completed in coordination with Egypt's ministries of tourism and housing. * Saka Road and Bridge, Uganda – Award of Merit (Roads & Highways) A strategic road link in eastern Uganda, built over flood-prone wetlands. The project was delivered 11 months ahead of schedule, following a presidential directive. * Suez Canal Global Museum, Ismailia – Award of Merit (Restoration) A historic building restored and transformed into a museum documenting the canal's history from 1869 to the present. Arab Contractors Chairman Ahmed El Assar said the company's success underscores the capabilities of Egyptian engineers and companies on the global stage. "These awards reflect Egypt's growing competitiveness in executing complex international projects to world-class standards," El Assar said. "They are global recognition of the Egyptian engineer and workforce." Attribution: Amwal Al Ghad English
