Egypt given FIFA headline over Ghana World Cup playoff Egypt must provide ‘comprehensive security guarantees' by 28 October if they are to host Ghana in Cairo in the second leg of the World Cup qualifying playoff
World governing body FIFA has given Egypt 17 days to provide security guarantees if they are to host Ghana in Cairo in the second leg of the World Cup qualifying playoff on 19 November. A recent flare-up in violence in the turmoil-stricken country has prompted Ghana to ask FIFA to move the game from Cairo, where the match is scheduled to be played at the army-owned Air Defence Stadium. At least 57 were killed in clashes between supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and his opponents and security forces on 6 October as Islamists marched nationwide on the 40th anniversary of Egypt's war against Israel. In a letter sent to the football associations of Ghana and Egypt, FIFA said Egypt has until 28 October to provide security guarantees and reveal their security plan for the game, which would then be assessed by the world governing body. “Although all our hopes and wishes sincerely expect that the security situation will go back to normal in a definite manner we would need to consider alternatives in the event that this were not the case in November,” the letter read, according to Ghana's Football Association official website. “We will this keep monitoring the situation as possibly revert to you with additional request/enquiries in due course.” Ghana host Egypt in the first leg in Kumasi on Tuesday.
