Salah's Basel virtually wrap up Swiss league title Basel, who boast Egyptian duo Mohamed Salah and Mohamed El-Neny, effectively win the Swiss league title after beating Young Boys 2-1 on Wednesday
Basel are virtually crowned Swiss league champions for the fourth consecutive year after beating Young Boys 2-1 in the penultimate game of the season on Wednesday. The win gives leaders Basel a three-point lead over second-placed Grasshopper, who beat St. Gallen 2-1, with one match to go. Grasshopper's task to clinch the title is almost impossible, given that they need to go level on points with Basel and overturn a huge goal difference of 16 goals. Egypt forward Mohamed Salah started on the bench against Young Boys before replacing striker Marco Streller on the hour mark. Compatriot Mohamed El-Neny also came on as a second-half substitute, replacing David Degen with 11 minutes remaining. Veteran striker Alexander Frei scored the winner on 55 minutes after converting a penalty. Salah has been instrumental in Basel's league triumph, having made an instant impact after joining from Egyptian side Arab Contractors last summer. Although he was criticised for wasting many easy goal-scoring opportunities, having only managed to net five goals in 27 league appearances, he was applauded for creating goals for his teammates as well as wreaking havoc in opposing backlines. His mazy runs, catchy feints and pinpoint passes were huge assets to Basel. He also played a key role in helping them reach the Europa League semi-final for the first time in their history. He was also on target in Basel's 3-1 defeat at eventual Europa League winners Chelsea in the second-leg of their semi-final tie. Mohamed El-Neny was equally effective, pulling the strings in the team's midfield after moving to Basel in January on a six-month loan deal. Basel said they would open talks with Contractors to sign him on a permanent basis at the end of the season. Salah and El-Neny are integral members of Egypt's national team, which is preparing for two World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Mozambique next month.
