The Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF) today requested reports from scholars from Al-Azhar and other intellectuals to use in the process of articulating important principles to follow in the new Egyptian constitution. Al-Azhar invited all political coalitions to help draft and edit the documents for the SCAF. Many of the people participating in the drafting of documents accused Salafi participants of attacking members – including Azhar scholars – during the process. Participants also accused them and other fundamentalist groups of attempting to prevent al-Azhar from being an active participant in Egyptian political life. The fundamentalist Islamists were also accused of working with only Saudi interests in mind. The Head of Al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayeb will soon meet with representatives from Salafi movements, fulfilling a promise to hold constructive dialogue with all political groups, a source told Youm7. Al-Tayeb will hold a press conference tomorrow during which he will discuss current Egyptian affairs and the role for Al-Azhar in such affairs, the source added.
