Ahli coach Manuel Jose admitted that the poor start to group stage campaign cost his side a place in the Champions League semi-finals. The six-time African champions were held to a disappointing 1-1 draw with Esperance on Saturday, which meant they are out of the group stages for the first time since 2002. Jose believes that the 3-3 home draw with Wydad Casablanca in July proved decisive as he refused to blame his players after conceding a dubious goal against Esperance. “I think the draw with Wydad in Cairo was the reason behind the exit, but I am proud of my players and thanks to the fans for supporting us throughout the 90 minutes,” the Portuguese said after the game. “I cannot blame my players after conceding an offside goal, but we expect better in the future.” Ahli were punished by a classy header from Cameroonian defender Yaya Banana, who was clearly offside before converting Khaled Korbi's cross in the first half.
