Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas struck home late in the second-half to hand Arsenal a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Manchester City at Emirates Stadium in the Premiership on Saturday. City were hoping to maintain their 100% start this season or at least snatch a point away from home and were close to doing so, thanks to Kasper Schmeichel's brilliance. The Dane keeper, son of former Manchester United great Peter Schmeichel, blocked Robin van Persie's penalty eight minutes past the hour mark after Micah Richards had fouled Alexander Hleb. He also saved another powerful shot from Fabregas but the former Barcelona youngster finally broke the visitors' resistance ten minutes from time. Belarusian winger Hleb made some good work on the right before feeding Fabregas, who smashed a powerful bullet into the back of the net.
Lampard scored Chelsea's winner Elsewhere, Chelsea extended their unbeaten home record to 65 games after beating Portsmouth 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Frank Lampard scored what proved to be the winner in the 31st after drilling a low drive past Portsmouth keeper David James. Earlier on Saturday, Liverpool eased past Sunderland 2-0 at Stadium of Light, thanks to two goals from Malian midfielder Mohamed Sissoko and Ukraine's Andrei Voronin. Chelsea are on top of the Premiership table with ten points, one ahead of second-placed Manchester City. Wigan Athletic lie third on seven points, on level with Liverpool and Arsenal who lie fourth and fifth respectively and each have one match in hand.
