Thomas Vermaelen scored twice as Arsenal recovered from two successive defeats in the Premiership to thrash Wigan Athletic 4-0 at Emirates Stadium on Saturday. The Belgian central defender opened the scoring after 25 minutes when he headed in a corner. He scored his second of the night and doubled Arsenal's lead four minutes after the restart with a delightful curling shot. Emmanuel Eboue diverted an Eduardo da Silva shot into the net to make it 3-0 on 59 minutes. Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas completed the rout in stoppage time with a close-range flick. Arsenal, who lost to Manchester United and City in their last two games, lie seventh in the Premier League table on nine points, six behind leaders Chelsea. Fernando Torres struck twice as Liverpool claimed a hard-fought 3-2 win at West Ham later in the day. The Spain striker put Liverpool in front after 20 minutes but West Ham striker Alessandro Diamanti restored parity nine minutes later. Dirk Kuyt restored the Reds' advantage on 41 minutes but Carlton Cole leveled again shortly after the restart.
