Everton midfielder Andy Van Der Meyde is recovering in a hospital after having his drink spiked. Van Der Meyde was rushed to the hospital in Liverpool where he is receiving treatment for what his partner claimed was a spiked drink. "Police were called at 2.40am by a woman saying her partner had had his drink spiked," a police spokesman said according to a statement on Everton's website. "Inquiries have been made at bars in Liverpool city centre and CCTV footage is being examined." Everton was quick to release an announcement confirming the player was hospitalized with an illness, but the club did not comment on details. "His progress is currently being monitored by hospital staff and the club will be making no further comment on the incident until after Merseyside Police has completed its ongoing investigation into the circumstances leading up to Andy's admission into hospital," the statement said. Everton signed Van Der Meyde last August, and the Dutch player has had a rocky year. He has suffered numerous injuries in the last season and earlier this year was forced to deny rumors of alcoholism. The 26-year-old Dutchman responded to the accusations in an interview on the club's website, saying while he had struggled since arriving at the English club, he was not an alcoholic. "I've heard people say that I drink a lot and that I have been going out all the time," he said. "But we are all human and we all have problems. When I was out injured things were just so difficult. "I was frustrated with everything and I wanted to forget things. But I am not an alcoholic."
