Rooney to miss England's World Cup group-stage
Published in FilGoal on 26 - 05 - 2006

England striker Wayne Rooney will be heading to Germany with the England squad for the World Cup, but without a final and confirmed return date, the English Football Association announced in a statement on Friday.
"England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson is delighted to confirm that Rooney will meet up with the rest of the squad in Manchester on Sunday," the statement said on the England FA official website.
"Rooney will continue his rehabilitation with the Manchester United staff before he flies to Germany with the England party on June 5th, he will return to Manchester on June 14th for a second scan," the statement added.
Rooney broke a metatarsal bone in his foot while playing for Manchester United against Chelsea on Aril 29th, and the injury was thought to keep him out for three months, but Eriksson said that he is optimistic about Rooney making the trip to Germany with the team.
"This is very encouraging news, I'm looking forward to Wayne joining the squad on Sunday, the fact that he's flying out to Germany will give us all a huge lift," Eriksson said.
England will be facing Paraguay on June 10th before their second group game against Trinidad and Tobago on June 15th, which decreases Rooney's hopes of taking art in any group stage action, as Eriksson will be waiting on the second scan's result.
"We are still hoping that the second scan will show further improvement and that Wayne can play his part in the World Cup," Eriksson considered.
