Nigeria set one foot in the World Cup after coming back from one goal behind to edge out Ethiopia 2-1 in the qualifying playoff first leg in Addis Ababa.
Young midfielder Behailu Assefa gave the hosts a second-half lead with a cross-cum-shot that the keeper handled after the ball had crossed the line.
But Fenerbahce striker Emmanuel Emenike leveled with a tremendous long-range shot before completing the comeback with a coolly struck spot-kick on 90 minutes to dent Ethiopia's World Cup chances.
Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso had registered wins while Egypt visit Ghana and Cameroon face Tunisia this week.
