Ahli have quashed rumors of celebrating the Port-Said trial verdict with the fans, stressing that the club only intend to organize a memorial day for the victims of last year's calamity. In the wake of Egypt's worst-ever sport catastrophe, twenty-one defendants have been sentenced to death by court for their part in killing over 70 Ahli fans on February 1 2012. The verdict brought ‘satisfaction and relief' to Ahli's board, while the Reds' ultras fans – who have been calling for ‘retribution' for months – were seen celebrating in the streets of Cairo. However, the announcement was followed by vicious clashes between protestors and police in the city of Port-Said, where around 40 people have lost their lives so far.
No celebration “There will be no celebrations whatsoever on February 1," Ahli GM Mahmoud Allam told the club's website. “This day is just to honor the martyrs of the disaster and has nothing to do with the verdict. “The event will only witness the attendance of the victims' families, board members and Ahli teams."
