Horror for Hanna:Awoman was playing with her two-year-old daughter on the ledge of the bedroom window in their fourth-floor flat, overlooking the street in Shubra el- Kheima, when she lost her grip and the little girl fell to her death. The deceased was named as Hanna Atef and her mother as Rania Mohamed (22). Hanna was taken to Nasser General Hospital, but it was too late to save her. Her mother had to be taken to hospital too, to be treated for shock. Candid cameras: A sales rep working for a branch of an international jewellery company stole 4.5kg of gold jewellery worth about LE1 million from a suitcase, ready for distribution to the branch's provincial branches and traders, hoping that no-one would notice. What the thief didn't reckon on, however, was the security cameras. They certainly did notice. Before detectives replayed the tapes from the cameras, they already suspected it was an inside job, because there was no sign of a disturbance on the premises of the branch, Egypt's largest jewellery shop. The theft occurred in the depths of the night and the suspect, a 27-year-old man named as Moustafa Amin, gained access to the Gamiliya, Islamic Cairo branch of the world-famous Damas company, using a key he'd had cut from another member of staff's. Moustafa, who lives in nearby el-Darb el- Ahmar and got married a few months ago, decided to burgle the place where he worked, a branch of the Middle East's leading jewellery and watch retailer, because he was short of money. When he was arrested, Moustafa admitted stealing the jewellery from the Gamaliya branch of Damas, founded in Syria in 1907. He'd hidden the valuables in his home and they have been restored to the company. He didn't have time to sell them. A nasty piece of work: A retired civil servant has accused his son of killing his paternal uncle (the civil servant's brother). The accusation comes two months after the uncle's death. The father told police that he believes that his son put poison in the deceased's food and medicine. It was in February that the civil servant's brother was buried in the public Muslim cemetery in 6th October City. The nephew of the deceased has been arrested and referred to the Sayyeda Zeinab Prosecutor. The paternal uncle lived on his own, until last December, when the suspect was released from prison and he let him stay with him. He'd been sent down for not honouringcheques. In the meantime, his late uncle's body has been exhumed for an autopsy. The story started when Rashad Shafiq (82) went to el Sayyeda Police Station to file a report against his son, aged 55, accusing him of poisoning his 87-year-old brother, in order to get his hands on his inheritance. The unnamed nephew has been released on bail, pending the results of the autopsy. He used to give his aged uncle his medicine every day. Despite this kindness, he has a reputation for being a nasty piece of work.
