Medical malpractice takes woman's life; donkey finds owner's dead body CAIRO: This week, murder, rape and traffic accidents made headline news in the crime sections of local newspapers. In one such incident, a mother of nine was killed while defending her son, reported Al-Wafd in their Oct. 19 edition. A 23-year-old man went to the woman's house asking her son to pay back the LE 45 he had borrowed from him. The mother explained that they didn't have the money, but promised to pay him back as soon as they could. The man couldn't wait; he pulled out his gun and started shooting at the son. The mother rushed in to protect her son and was subsequently shot in the head. She died immediately. The offender escaped to a nearby field, but the police located and arrested him. Al-Masry Al-Youm reported a medical scandal on the same day. In one of Alexandria's private hospitals, a housewife died during an abortion. The doctors claimed that she had been bleeding internally, and as a result did not survive the operation, but this information conflicted with the health inspector's report that confirmed that she had had an ectopic pregnancy (when the fetus forms outside the uterus). Accordingly, the doctors' abortion resulted in their patient's death. Al-Akhbar reported another family incident. A stepmother allegedly beat her husband s four-year-old child to death because he stayed out to play in the street past his curfew. The child s body was found disfigured by multiple bruises and wounds. The stepmother confessed to her crimes. A man received severe stab wounds from his father-in-law, according to a report in Al-Gomhuriah on Oct. 18. The husband and his wife were going through marital problems and the wife had gone to stay with her parents. The husband had planned to sort things out with his wife before Eid Al-Fitr, but his father-in-law fought with him, stabbing him multiple times with the aid of his son. In Al-Kanater Al-Khayrya, a 43-year-old man, slaughtered his 40-year-old brother following a dispute over a rented apartment they both wanted to buy, stated another report by Al-Gomhuriah. In the Oct. 18 edition, the paper also reported two rape trials. In Minya, a 15-year-old girl was raped by four men while being held in an apartment for six days. The four offenders were arrested and further investigations are being carried out. In a similar incident three men attempted to rape Thanaa Ali, a 20-year-old woman, who had they kidnapped while riding in a taxi. Police arrived at the crime scene in time to prevent the assailants from carrying out their intentions. Reports of traffic accidents are not uncommon, but the frequency last week seemed especially high. Four-year-old Hanin was crushed under the wheels of her school bus, right before her mother's eyes. The driver allegedly wasn't paying attention and drove over the little girl, killing her. The father urged the minister of education to intervene quickly by carrying out an inquiry into his daughter's death, terming her a victim of neglect, in order to prevent similar tragedies from happening again, reported Al-Wafd in their Oct. 19 edition. On the same day, El-Messa reported that a truck with no driver hit a 58-year-old woman sitting in front of her house. The report stated that there were no suspects. Al-Akhbar reported that a false fire alarm on train number 80, which had stopped briefly in Al-Ayat to allow passenger to embark, resulted in the injury of five passengers. Four were reported to have suffered minor bruises and injuries, but the fifth victim fell under the wheels of the train and lost his legs. A malfunction in the brakes of one of the train s cars and the smoke pouring from the last car incited panic among the passengers who rushed to get out of the train. The situation was exacerbated by one of the passengers who screamed warnings to the other passengers that the train had caught fire. After its wheels had cooled down, the train resumed its journey. One day earlier, according to a report by FilBalad.com, an accident between two buses in Abdel Moneim Riyadh Square, paralyzed traffic completely in Al-Gala' street, Ramses Square and downtown Cairo. Al-Messa reported an unusual crime in its Oct. 18 edition. A farmer was found dead, with several head injuries. His donkey found the body thrown in a field in Al-Kebir in Ismailia. The victim's wife reported that her husband had gone to visit some nearby relatives. A few hours later his donkey returned without him.
