Young girl raped and killed; washing machine takes woman s life
CAIRO: The last days of Ramadan were marked by many crimes and unfortunate incidents. As people prepared for the Eid Al-Fitr feast, fires, murders, and thefts cast a grim pall over the holiday.
Al-Basateen district witnessed a sorrowful incident right around iftar, reported Al-Gomhuriah newspaper. Three were killed and four more were injured following the explosion of a kitchen's butane tank. Three charred corpses of a 60-year-old housewife and her two grandchildren were found at the apartment after the fire was extinguished. Investigations revealed that the small fire had started in the kitchen while the grandmother was preparing iftar, she asked for her neighbors' help in extinguishing the fire but unfortunately they couldn't control it and the tank exploded, destroying the entire apartment. Four of the neighbors were hospitalized at Ahmad Maher Hospital for first degree burns.
Following a fight with his wife, a supermarket owner injured his brother-in-law in a crime reported by Al-Messa. A week earlier, the supermarket owner s wife left their home following a disagreement and went to stay with her parents. The husband tried many times to convince her to come home but her family refused. When he tried to contact his wife by phone, his brother-in-law answered and they exchanged insults. The brother-in-law then went to the assailant s house to talk things out, but the husband, still angry at their heated exchange, grabbed a gun and shot him. The victim was hospitalized and was reported to be in serious condition.
A housewife set fire to her husband's bride s apartment, according to the Monday edition of Al-Wafd newspaper. The 37-year-old woman was blinded by anger and jealousy when she discovered that her husband had married a younger woman. She decided to kill them both. She spilled kerosene all over their apartment and set it on fire during iftar. The newlyweds survived the fire.
Al-Gomhuriah newspaper on Sunday reported that an 11-year-old girl was found dead and unclothed in a barn. Preliminary investigations suggested that the victim was murdered after being raped by someone she was familiar with. The girl's father was unable to suggest any suspects as he believed that he was on good terms with all his neighbors. He also stated that his daughter was a very decent and well-behaved girl.
Six university students drowned in a tragic accident on the shores of Abo Bir, when they were swept into the sea by the waves while they were swimming before iftar. Only five bodies were found and the search continues for the sixth, according to reports by Al-Ahram Al-Masaey on Oct. 20.
On the same day, Al-Masry Al-Youm reported that a university student in Al-Qalyubia stole a mobile and gold jewelry weighing over half a kilogram from her friend's house while visiting her.
Al-Gomhuriah reported the crimes of the final days of Ramadan in their Oct. 24 issue. In Ain Shams, a gang of three people was arrested for auto theft. They specialized in stealing cars then selling them after changing their license numbers. They admitted to stealing seven cars around Cairo.
In Nasr City, three unemployed people took up stealing women's handbags instead of looking for a job, using a car to aid in their purse snatching. They were arrested and admitted to 12 thefts.
Hekmat Mahmoud was praying in Al-Sayeda Nafissa Mosque when she had a sudden heart attack and died. Her husband collapsed when he received the news.
Hamida, a 40-year-old lady received an electric shock from her washing machine. She dropped dead before her husband's eyes.
