From a bank manager's diary
Published in The Egyptian Gazette on 24 - 03 - 2010

TODAY I am going to interview a new candidate to be the Administrative Affairs Manager at the bank.
I noticed while interviewing him that he gave me his personal business card on which his name and the institution he works in were written, and under them there was the phrase (Manager of the Logistics Affairs).
The "Logistics Affairs" was a new term in that time for old affairs carried out by banks and all institutions.
They are the administrative and support business without which the work of the institution would not be correct. In old times they said (the thing that the obligation can't be done without, is an obligation); these affairs, which were called (Administrative Affairs), were sometimes subjoined to personnel affairs so the name of the administration was called (the Administration of the Personnel Affairs and the Administrative Affairs).
Other times, they were also subjoined to the financial administration, which was called in such case (the Administration of the Financial and Administrative Affairs). The organisational structures of other banks and institutions have become centred on new names.
The personnel affairs became the Human Resources, but in a new concept, which includes designation, transference, delegation, job rotation, vacations, determining the career path, as well as the training. The Financial Affairs became the Financial Control Sector whichincludes the Financial Affairs in addition to the financial analysis, the budget, the balance sheet, the central accounts and the conciliation.
The Administrative Affairs were separated from both the Financial Affairs and the Personnel Affairs as they have now their own significance in the organisational structure of any bank or institution and their name changed from the Administrative Affairs to the Logistics Affairs.
The tasks of the Administrative Affairs were often wrongly seen as tasks that do not live up to the other technical and financial tasks done by other administrations on the basis that they are tasks of repetitive nature. Such tasks are done in all institutions without giving any specificity to the institution, which performs those tasks.
The Administrative Affairs " in a bank " are the same as the ones in any other institution. It is not difficult for an Administrative Affairs Manager in a factory or company to become an Administrative Affairs Manager in a bank without noticing a big change in the tasks that he does except for the working circumstances, the functional relations, the expansion in the number of the branches and also the expansion in these administrative affairs.
Otherwise there is no difference between the Administrative Affairs inany institution, those in the middle administration level or who carry out executive tasks might underestimate the administrative affairs.
However, the view of the higher administration of the bank or any institution about the Administrative Affairs is the view of the world about the insides of the critical importance that surrounds these tasks and which helps a lot in the success or failure of the institution,. The more these tasks are accurate and committed whether concerning the tasks of the supportive jobs (labours), drivers, cars, security, cleanness, cash transferring, suppliers record, purchases, stores, inventory tasks and maintenance, the more other tasks of the institution are at a high level of performance, and vice versa, as whenever the logistic tasks drop to a lower level it overshadows the general performance of the institution.
On this basis, I was very concernedto strengthen the logistic tasks in the bank, and separate them entirely from any of the Administrative Affairs or the Personnel Affairs. I assigned an administration for them that takes care of these tasks called (supportive) tasks for the other main tasks in the bank.
I met the candidate manager for the Administrative Affairs and I did not want to call them with the new name (the Logistics Affairs) until I learn about its meaning, since it was used, in which institutions it was used first, and the wisdom for naming it in lieu of the Administrative Affairs.
After many readings, I preferred to keep the Administration's name to remain (Administrative Affairs Department), though I was careful, at every occasion, to mention that the tasks the Administrative AffairsDepartment carry out are the Logistics Affairs of the bank!
