CAIRO - The Cairo underground service hours will be extended until 2.15am during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, a senior transport official said Sunday. Minister of Transport Alaa Fahmi said that the operation of the Underground trains, which carry an estimated 2.5 million passengers on a daily basis, will reach 21 hours during Ramadan, which is expected to start on August 11 this year. Meanwhile, the Underground journeys on the first time, stretching from Helwan south of Cairo to el-Marg in northern Cairo, will increase from 506 to 526 during Ramadan. The journeys on the second line, running between Shubra el-Kheima in northern Cairo will increase from 620 to 670 during the same month. In Ramadan, Muslims have to abstain from eating, drinking and sex from dawn to sunset.
