Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, held discussions with officials from Huawei and Shanghai's Renji Smart Hospital on advancing cooperation in medical technology and artificial intelligence (AI) during his participation in the "Huawei Connect 2025" conference in China from 18 to 20 September. Health Ministry spokesperson Hossam Abdel Ghaffar said the minister emphasised, in his meeting with Huawei executives, the importance of investing in advanced technologies to meet future healthcare demands and enhance the quality of hospital services. Talks covered the use of digital innovations to analyse medical data and develop health maps to track disease patterns and improve diagnostic accuracy. The discussions also addressed training medical and administrative staff on digital transformation and equipping them with skills in data management technologies, thereby supporting the creation of smarter and more efficient health systems. During his tour of the exhibition, the minister reviewed AI-powered applications in surgery and diagnostics, along with digital solutions aimed at improving surgical outcomes. In a separate meeting with Renji Smart Hospital officials, Abdel Ghaffar explored opportunities for collaboration in developing digital hospitals. He toured the facility, which accommodates 3,000 beds and employs around 1,200 doctors, and is distinguished by a fully integrated digital system that covers all services from patient registration to electronic medical records. The hospital also provides telemedicine consultations to reduce the need for in-person visits. The talks further highlighted advanced training programmes for Egyptian doctors in oncology, gynaecology, and major surgeries, as well as opportunities for academic collaboration and specialised medical training. Abdel Ghaffar noted that these initiatives align with Egypt's Vision 2030 healthcare reform strategy, which prioritises digital transformation and smart services to raise quality and safety standards across hospitals. Renji Smart Hospital also operates a digital control centre that leverages AI to collect and analyse data, enabling faster and more precise clinical and administrative decision-making. Abdel Ghaffar affirmed that Egypt is keen to draw on this model to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure and advance its digital health agenda.
