Egypt's Bio Energy Association for Sustainable Development (BASD), backed by the environment ministry, signed a cooperation agreement with Italy's Eni to prepare a feasibility study for biogas production units that use animal and agricultural waste, the ministry said Monday. The initiative supports Egypt's clean energy transition and sustainable development goals, the ministry said in a statement. Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment Manal Awad said the agreement marks a new step in expanding partnerships with private-sector and international partners to scale up biogas technologies nationwide. She said the project aims to convert agricultural and animal waste into clean energy, boosting rural economies and cutting emissions. According to the ministry, the project could later extend to governorates with large volumes of organic waste — including waste from hotels — under the National Agricultural Waste Strategy to promote efficient resource use. The pilot site is designed to handle waste from around 200 barns, contributing to safe waste disposal and renewable energy generation for local communities. Founded in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), BASD operates under the Ministry of Social Solidarity and promotes biogas adoption in Egypt through technical support and pilot initiatives.
