Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry participated on Wednesday in a meeting of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government (CAHOSCC) that was held on the side-lines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The meeting was chaired by President of Kenya William Ruto. According to a statement by the ministry, Shoukry — who is also the President-Designate of the upcoming UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27) — started off the meeting by conveying the congratulations of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to the Kenyan president on assuming the functions of coordinator of this committee, which the continent relies on to strengthen African action in terms of climate change. The minister also reviewed the determinants on which the vision of the Egyptian presidency of the COP27 conference is based, explaining that the conference is being held on African soil, which should work to address African concerns in the field of climate. This includes the implementation of climate pledges and a just transition towards a green economy, in addition to adapting to climate change and addressing the losses and damage caused by it, as well as providing appropriate climate finance to developing countries. Moreover, he said that the COP27 will adopt a comprehensive approach that will ensure the effective engagement of all parties involved in international climate action, including the private sector and civil society. Furthermore, he reviewed the various events that will be included in the conference in a way that achieves the required interaction with all parties of climate work and contributes to reaching the desired results.
