Egypt's Environment Minister, EU Green Deal Commissioner discuss cooperation
The cooperation includes EU assistance in preparing for the Sharm El-Sheikh climate conference
Published in Daily News Egypt on 11 - 04 - 2022

Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad met with Frans Timmermans — the Executive Vice President of the European Commission and Commissioner of the European Green Deal — to discuss mechanisms of cooperation in support of the roadmap for hosting the UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP 27).
During the meeting, Fouad praised the EU's decision to put the climate agenda at the top of its priorities, especially with the need to expedite implementing measures to confront the effects of climate change for the sake of humanity.
She added that the COP 27 — will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh this November — will build on the successes of the COP 26 that was held in Glasgow, UK, as well as work to ensure further progress on the climate agenda and raise the ceiling of ambition while helping developing countries to access sources of financing.
The minister also confirmed that the climate agenda has become a priority for discussion across the various levels of the Egyptian government, including the Cabinet, the Supreme Committee for Organising the Climate Conference, and the National Council on Climate Change — from which the 2050 National Climate Change Strategy emerged.
She further explained that the COP 27 seeks to present success stories and pioneering projects and programmes in the climate field implemented in various countries of the world, starting with community projects related to risk management, disasters and adaptation, and policy programmes.
For his part, Timmermans praised the role of the Egyptian Minister of Environment in the COP 26 to produce constructive results, expressing his aspiration to cooperate with Egypt in preparing for the COP 27 and to work for its success and making constructive progress in the areas of financing, adaptation, losses and damages, updating strategies for countries' national contributions, and fulfilling Glasgow's commitments.
